HI friends, this is Julie. I mentioned before that my house was built in the early 80s and when we moved into our house in 2007, it had never been updated. We have been working to update pretty much everything here!!
In new homes, I love some of the small, but oh so convenient, features. One small upgrade I just finished was adding a pull out trash to my cabinets. I was so happy to get the trash out from under the sink. With the trash under the sink it was so inconvenient to throw something away when doing the dishes.
I’ve used Rev-A-Shelf products before, check out my Pantry Project, and have had great success with them. Rev-A-Shelf makes all different sized pull out trash systems to work for any cabinet situation, I purchased mine here.
This is a photo of my target cabinet.
The first thing I did was remove part of the shelf. I did this by cutting the shelf in place with a jig saw. It was a little difficult as I got to each end, I then switched to a hand saw.
I added a support to the end of my shelf to give it some extra support .
Next, I installed a divider between my trash area and the adjacent cabinet. I used 1/4″ plywood for the divider and nailed it to the half of the shelf that stayed. I also added a small strip of wood to the floor of the adjacent cabinet and nailed this divider to that strip.
The back of this cabinet is made of thin wood, so I needed to add a piece of 3/4″ plywood to the back of my cabinet. The pull out trash rails attach to the back of the cabinet and they have something sturdy to attach to. I attached this back plate with wood glue. Then used pocket screws to attach it to the adjacent cabinet shelf and the left side of the cabinet. I added a strip of wood to the cabinet frame because my cabinet is a bit wider than the pull out trash that I ordered.
The next thing I did was attach the door to the pull out trash. I filled the screw holes from the hinges and that was it! The hardest part of this project was prepping my cabinet to work with the Rev-A-Shelf pull out trash but for a small cost it was well worth it!. We’ve had it installed for less than a week and we are loving this added feature in our kitchen!
Use the photo below to save the project to Pinterest for later. Comment below if you have any questions of if you do a similar install, we’d love to hear about it!
